Beauty:Beast emerged in 1990 amidst Tokyo’s Ura-Harajuku punk scene, blending sensuous folklore with aggression and nihilism. Founded by Takao Yamashita, the brand symbolized rebellion against societal norms and parental disapproval. Yamashita, driven by a need for honest expression, turned to fashion as a means of communication, drawing inspiration from subcultures like Hip-Hop and Punk. His struggles with self-consciousness and familial rejection shaped the brand’s ethos, evident in its avant-garde designs and fantastical themes. Named after the French folktale, Beauty:Beast celebrates the inner beauty of the human spirit. Influenced by Westwood and McLaren’s Seditionaries, the brand’s unique creations, like the “Dark Knight” rabbit-shaped backpack, garnered attention in Paris during the 90s. Despite its humble beginnings, Beauty:Beast became a Ura-Harajuku classic, alongside renowned labels like Undercover and Number(Nine), embodying the spirit of creative defiance and individuality. Showcasing a pair of dead-stock limited edition cow leather pants from the brand. Released during the early 90’s period, they are constructed out of brown full-grain cowhide leather, featuring D-rings on both hips for suspenders attachment and a beautiful bootcut fit.
