Number (N)ine is a Japanese fashion label founded in 1996 by Takahiro Miyashita, whose designs were heavily inspired by rock music and subcultural aesthetics. The label gained recognition for its unique fusion of Americana pop/rock culture references, including homages to Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, and political themes, which made it a cult favorite worldwide. One of its most celebrated collections, Autumn/Winter 2006-07, titled “NOIR,” marked a shift in Miyashita’s focus from grunge street style to refined tailoring and construction, featuring meticulous details, dark fabrics, and Celtic punk rock influences, with pieces paying tribute to Shane MacGowan of The Pogues. Since Miyashita left the brand in 2009 to start his own label, Number (N)ine has struggled to maintain its initial impact, and its early designs remain highly sought after by fashion enthusiasts.
