Kansai Yamamoto (1944–2020) was a pioneering Japanese fashion designer renowned for his vibrant and avant-garde creations. Born in Yokohama, he initially studied civil engineering before venturing into fashion, apprenticing under designers Junko Koshino and Hisashi Hosono. In 1971, Yamamoto became the first Japanese designer to present a collection in London, gaining international acclaim for his bold designs inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of “basara,” characterized by wild maximalism. He is perhaps best known for crafting androgynous, futuristic stage costumes for David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust Tour. Beyond fashion, Yamamoto produced “Super Shows,” blending music, dance, and traditional Japanese culture, solidifying his legacy as a visionary artist.
